Recurrent UTIs and Oestrogen Replacement

Rooma Sinha (Doctor)

Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Medwin Hospitals, Hyderabad, India

Key Points

  • Postmenopausal women are at greatest risk of experiencing (recurrent) urinary tract infecions (UTIs).

  • Long-term use of antimicrobial agents remains the cornerstone of prevention of recurrent UTIs.

  • Locally-applied oestrogen also appears to prevent recurrent UTIs in postmenopausal women, probably by modifying the vaginal flora.

  • Further studies are needed to confirm the benefits of oestrogen therapy in preventing recurrent UTIs in postmenopausal women.
