I am delighted and privileged to be the Editor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology Communications. This journal was successfully launched at the last Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) meeting in Hyderabad, December 1998. In its first year of existence, six issues have appeared with contributions from renowned clinicians familiar with the problems faced by women in Southern Asia and the Indian subcontinent in particular. The primary objective of the journal is to improve the overall standard of healthcare for female patients. The target audience includes young gynaecologists, postgraduates, and practising clinicians of obstetrics and gynaecology in areas where access to a wide range of publications can be scarce. It is hoped that in the coming millennium the circulation will extend beyond the subcontinent of India, to other countries where access to current publications and periodicals is similarly lacking or difficult to come by. Unlike most scientific publications, Obstetrics & Gynaecology Communications aims to provide a comprehensive review of subjects that are of current relevance to practising clinicians. Whilst addressing issues of clinical relevance, the Journal has also tried to keep up with advances in molecular biology and technology that are taking place at such a rapid rate that many doctors will find it difficult to keep up.

This special commemorative millennium issue covers topics that are of immediate relevance. The editorial, for example, examines the state of women's healthcare in India at the dawn of the new millennium. Also included are the results of a survey of our Editorial board members in which they give their opinions on interesting recent developments in their specialty area of obstetrics and gynaecology, and the directions in which they think their discipline is headed in the new millennium. Their comments make most interesting and thought-provoking reading indeed. The international congress report section incorporates coverage of the All India Coordinating Committee of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (AICC/RCOG) meeting entitled 'Women in the New Millennium', held in Mumbai, September 1999. In addition, in acknowledgement that 1999 was also FOGSI's 'Year of the Adolescent Girl', a feature article on trauma in adolescent girls resulting in genital manifestations is published. On behalf of the Editorial Board and the publisher, I wish to thank all those who have contributed to the Journal and I hope that there will be even greater interest and enthusiasm among leading practitioners in our part of the world subscribing to Obstetrics & Gynaecology Communications.
