Toxoplasmosis in Pregnancy: A Review

Key Points

  • Toxoplasmosis in pregnancy can cause significant morbidity to the offspring.

  • Prevention can be effective if those at risk are taught how to avoid infection, an important aspect of health education.

  • Drug treatment is effective in limiting the impact of this disease and should be commenced as soon as possible after the diagnosis is made.

Table 1. Transmission of T.gondi to humans

Ingestion of tissue cysts in raw or undercooked mea

Ingestion of oocysts on contaminated vegetables or other food

Ingestion of contaminated cat litter or soil

Inhalation of contaminated dust

Ingestion of contaminated drinking water

Transmission from an infected mother via the placenta to the foetus (congenital infection)

Editor's Comment

Toxoplasmosis, a zoonotic infection, is caused by Toxoplasma gondii. Acute infection is usually followed by a chronic, asymptomatic state. However, in the obstetric setting T. gondii can cause severe ophthalmological and/or neurological disease, congenital malformations or even death in the developing foetus. The grim consequences of toxoplasmosis necessitate vigilance in diagnosis and active management.

Clinical Evaluation of M2-TONE in Unexplained Infertility

Dr. Chandravati (Head)
Dr. Manju Shukla

Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology,
King Georges Medical College, Lucknow, India

Summary

  • The present (uncontrolled) study assessed the efficacy of M2-TONE syrup ('M2-TONE'), a comprehensive non-hormonal herbomineral formulation, in the treatment of 165 women with unexplained infertility.

  • The overall conception rate on M2-TONE was very good (33%); there were no side effects of treatment.

  • Menstrual irregularities associated with unexplained infertility were also improved by M2-TONE.

  • M2-TONE is a valuable alternative therapy in the gynaecological armamentarium for the treatment of unexplained infertility.

Editor's Comment

Although the beneficial effects of numerous herbal/ayurvedic preparations in various gynaecological disorders have long been known, they have not to date been scientifically rationalised. In the present (uncontrolled) study, one such preparation (M2-TONE) was assessed in the treatment of unexplained infertility. The results are certainly encouraging, but need to be confirmed under controlled conditions.
