Menopausal Insomnia and Melatonin Use

Key Points

  • Significant numbers of menopausal women experience insomnia.

  • Melatonin is involved in sleep regulation, with secretion abnormalities implicated in sleep dysfunction.

  • Exogenous melatonin has been shown to enhance sleep duration and/or quality.

  • Optimal dose, duration and potential drug interactions have yet to be established.

  • Melatonin supplementation can be considered a rational therapeutic approach to postmenopausal insomnia.
