Summary
- Carcinoma of the uterine cervix with chronic uterine inversion was diagnosed in a 55-year-old multiparous woman.
- Such gynaecological uterine inversions are rare and result from either a fundal tumour or atrophy of the suspension ligaments.
- Treatment is dependent on tumour type, size and stage.
- Management in this case included vaginal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (after bilateral internal iliac artery ligation), and postoperative pelvic irradiation.
Editor's Comment
Carcinoma of the uterine cervix is the commonest genital tract malignancy in India. Chronic uterine inversion, however, is not a frequently encountered clinical condition; its association with carcinoma cervix is exceedingly rare, presenting a potential dilemma in management. This report outlines the presentation and subsequent management of one such case.
