Hormonal Replacement Therapy (HRT)

Key Points

  • HRT (oestrogen plus progestin) has a beneficial effect on bone preservation, the lipid profile, and the cardiovascular system in previously healthy women.

  • Unopposed oestrogen should not be used in women with an intact uterus.

  • HRT is not recommended for secondary prevention of CHD.

  • There is an increased risk of thromboembolic complications with HRT, but the risk-benefit profile is unchanged for most women.
