Facing the Challenge of Menopause

Dr Manju Purohit

Key Points

  • Most women will live long enough to become postmenopausal.

  • Menopause can be associated with discomfort, a decreased quality of life, and an increase in the risk of osteoporosis and heart disease.

  • The onset of menopause is an excellent time to assess a woman's overall health and the need for maintenance measures, which may include hormone replacement therapy.

  • Counselling and education for a healthy lifestyle are important.

Human Sperm Banking at the Turn of the Millenium

Dr Gautuam Allahbadia

Key Points

  • Sperm banking (freezing and storage of semen) has revolutionised the technique of donor insemination.

  • Cryopreserved sperm have a major advantage over fresh sperm in that they may be kept until the donor has been shown to be free of serious transmittable infection.

  • Sperm banks may be used by men working in hazardous occupations/environments or overseas, as well as by those undergoing an intervention that may adversely affect their reproductive potential (e.g. chemotherapy for genital malignancy).

  • Sperm banks of the future will increasingly focus on the storage of testicular tissue.
