Representing a landmark in the evolution of organised ophthalmology and, in particular, organised glaucoma services and education in the Asian region, this issue of Asian Journal of OPHTHALMOLOGY is the first as the official publication of the South East Asian Glaucoma Interest Group (SEAGIG), under the umbrella of the Asian Oceanic Glaucoma Society.
While the raison d' etre of the Journal remains reader-friendly presentations of summaries, reviews, and updates across the spectrum of ophthalmology, there will be some increase in emphasis on the detection and management of patients with glaucoma.
The Editorial Board is also keen to assist young and relatively inexperienced researchers in the region to present their research results as Original Articles via an international platform. The achievement of this Journal's indexation on the EMBASE database is an important advance to achieve this goal.
SEAGIG will soon be an incorporated entity with its own website, linked to that of this Journal. Later this year, the Asia-Pacific Glaucoma Guidelines will be published to assist ophthalmologists throughout the region optimally to manage patients with glaucoma with the world's best current knowledge and standards. The IMAGE educational series will continue to develop and, over the next few years, hopefully impact positively on rising standards of care. Indeed, these are exciting times for all of us.
My congratulations and thanks to the editing staff, especially Mary Smith and Neville Lobo, our major sponsor, Pfizer, and our publishers, Scientific Communications International Limited, who together make this publication possible, and to the Editorial Board, headed by Associate Professor Paul Chew, all of whose ongoing support remains vital for its success.
Welcome to our latest issue.
