INTERVIEW

Fighting Blindness Through Education
A mission for ORBIS

Project ORBIS uses a modified DC-10 aircraft to travel throughout the developing world teaching sight-saving skills to specialist doctors and nurses. The Asian Journal of OPHTHALMOLOGY interviewed Dr Amyna Merchant, Medical Director of ORBIS.
Since 1982, ORBIS has trained almost 40,000 doctors and nurses. It is estimated that millions of blind patients have been treated by these medical practitioners.
ORBIS is a humanitarian apolitical organisation, with staff from a variety of countries. ORBIS believes in collabaration and is now working with the World Bank on a cataract reduction programme for China. The group is also working with the World Health Organization on a strategy to eliminate needless blindness by the year 2000.
